Johannesburg - A "South African rape gang" alleged to be terrorising young women in the British town of Northampton was revealed by police to be nothing more than the figment of two girls' imagination, the Johannesburg Sunday Independent reported.

Northampton police had already stated last month that the suspects were not in fact South Africans, following the arrest of three men. The three were later released.

On Friday, police announced that after an eight-week operation by more than 50 officers, they were no longer hunting a gang of "predatory men" at all.
