Johannesburg - A 52-year-old man who faked his own hijacking was found guilty in Germiston magistrate's court on Monday of defeating the ends of justice, said Johannesburg police.
Superintendent Andy Pieke said the man - whose name could not be released as other investigations could arise from the case - pleaded guilty on Monday to staging the theft of his vehicle on Sunday.
He was sentenced to a R10 000 fine or two years' imprisonment, suspended for five years.
Pieke said the man was arrested on Sunday afternoon.
"The man reported to Elsburg police station that his bakkie had been stolen.
"He claimed he had been robbed of a Nissan bakkie near the old Heidelberg road in Dawn Park about noon.
"He said robbers forced him to accompany them to the N3 freeway where he managed to jump out of his bakkie."
He was given a lift to Elsburg police station where he reported the robbery. The vehicle had satellite tracking and was recovered in Verwoerd Park, Alberton, at 13:45, said Pieke.
"However, police investigating the incident found that the man's version of the story did not match with that of people at the scene of the robbery," said Pieke.
He said police confronted the man who said that he had staged the robbery.
He was arrested shortly afterwards.
