Westonaria - A 44-year-old man accused of raping a girl has refused in Westonaria magistrate's court to apply for bail, said West Rand police on Friday.
"I think he fears for his life. The public are baying for his blood," said sergeant Solomon Sibiya after the man's appearance on Thursday.
The man was arrested on Thursday after he allegedly raped the four-year-old girl in Bekkersdal and then offered her chips.
The girl, who left the man's shack crying and carrying her underwear and clothes, was raped on Monday afternoon, said Sibiya.
"She was playing outside the man's shack when he called her inside," he said.
The child's mother, later noticing her naked child was distressed, asked her what had happened.
"The girl started to tell of the rape ordeal and also mentioned the suspect.
"It is claimed the mother approached the suspect, who apologised and promised to buy the girl some chips."
Sibiya said a large number of Westonaria residents turned up for the court appearance.
The man will remain in custody until his next court date on October 25.
