  • Johannesburg - No arrests have been made in the murder case of six-year-old Gairoenisha Ganchi of Eldorado Park, a Gauteng police spokesperson said on Sunday.

Superintendent Mary Martins-Engelbrecht said a man, whom the community suspect to have been involved in Ganchi's kidnapping and murder, was apprehended on Saturday.

"But he was arrested for vehicle theft with two other people."

She said clothing items were taken from the man and sent for forensic tests to determine whether the community's allegations were true or not.

Martins-Engelbrecht also denied media reports that the police admitted to any wrong doing in the handling of the girl's case.

"We are busy with internal investigations into allegations that the family turned away when they came to report the girl missing.

"But at no stage did we admit that we were wrong. How can we admit to something if it's still under investigations?"

She said, however, that they would be disappointed if what the family said happened, actually did take place.

Ghanci went missing on Thursday afternoon and her naked and mutilated body was found on Friday morning at a veld near her home.

She was buried on Friday evening.
