  • Gun licences: 17 000 appeal
  • Huge backlog with gun licences
  • Johannesburg - Gun owners born between January 1 and March 31 have until the end of December to renew their licences otherwise their firearms would be considered illegal after that date, Eastern Cape police said on Tuesday.

"Those whose renewal period expires in December 2005 must note that if they fail to comply, their firearms could be regarded as illegal," Captain Thembinkosi Kinana said.

"Consequently, they could be charged for possession of illegal firearms," he said in a statement.

Kinana said those who were born between April and June should renew their licences next year, those born between July and September should do so in 2007.

Those born October and December have the whole of 2008 to renew their licences. Business enterprises have next year to do so, he said.

"This call for renewal of firearms has been made throughout the year, and therefore we believe that very few or none from our communities will to have not heard the message," he said.
