Cop shot dead in robbery chase

Johannesburg - A policeman was shot dead on Thursday afternoon during a bank robbery at Northgate shopping centre near Honeydew, said West Rand police.
Superintendent Milica Bezuidenhout said police were responding to the robbery when they saw a man speeding off from the mall.
They gave chase and the robbers opened fire on the police van, hitting the police officer several times in the chest.
His partner, who was driving, sped off to a fire station nearby to seek medical assistance.
The medical team tried resuscitating the policeman, but it was too late.
His next-of-kin are still to be notified.
