Ennerdale - A teenaged mother was arrested for dumping her newborn baby in a dustbin in Lenasia South on Thursday morning, said Vaal Rand police.
The 19-year-old girl from Ennerdale delivered her baby in a bathroom she asked to use at the Lenasia house, said superintendent Maria Mazibuko.
She wrapped her newborn daughter in a towel and dumped her in a dustbin as she left.
"The three men who live at that house, who had allowed her to use the toilet, saw her do this. They apprehended her, called the police and a neighbour rushed to save the baby," said Mazibuko.
The child was taken to a clinic where she was declared healthy and was released into the care of her grandmother and the child protection unit.
The 19-year-old would appear in the Vereeniging magistrate's court on Monday on charges of child abandonment, Mazibuko said.
