Call to keep exams 'clean'

Johannesburg - Education quality assurance body Umalusi on Wednesday said it had instructed all Matric examination assessment bodies not to use teachers found guilty of examination irregularities to administer matric exams.
The 843 students who were found to have contravened exam regulations in Mpumalanga last year were allowed to re-sit exams this year, said Umalusi chief executive Peliwe Lolwana in Pretoria.
She said the affected schools were deregistered by the education department from offering the 2005 and 2006 matric exam.
The decision was, however, suspended for two years.
Should similar incidents occur during that time, the suspension would be lifted and the schools would be unable to offer exams for two years.
"It is important to understand the role of Umalusi in this regard. The measures against teachers are a matter for the department of education and the SA Council of Educators.
"All we have done is ask that those involved in the cheating not officiate in the exams."
A total of 61 teachers were implicated in the incident, of which 19 from public schools were found guilty, given warnings and fined R3 000 each.
