Nelspruit - There will be extra security for Mpumalanga's matric 2005, including for the 843 pupils who cheated in last year's examinations, said Mpumalanga education's Thomas Msiza on Wednesday.
The 843 are rewriting their exams with this year's matric pupils after their 2004 results were nullified by the examinations board, Umalusi.
Msiza said the cheats were writing under strict security with this year's pupils, to prevent a repeat of last year's scandal.
Msiza said no problems had been reported so far.
More than 60 000 candidates, including last year's cheats, are sitting for this year's examinations, which started on October 6 and are expected to end on November 23.
"Everything is going smoothly," said Msiza.
The department has appointed invigilators and permanent monitors at all schools to minimise the chances of cheating.
The teachers found guilty of helping pupils to cheat last year by giving the answers and sight of exam papers have been suspended from invigilating for two years. They also were fined R3 000.
Altogether 40 850 full-time and 19 307 part-time candidates registered for this year's exams, which are being written at 423 centres for full-time pupils and 186 centres for part-time candidates.
Papers will be marked for seven days starting from December 1.
