19/10/2005 19:36 - (SA)
Johannesburg - A Nigerian drug dealer has been caught in possession of 2.5kg of heroin, Gauteng police said on Wednesday.
Senior superintendent Mary Martins-Engelbrecht described the 44-year-old man as a drug "kingpin" and called his arrest a "major breakthrough".
She said the man was arrested in Bedfordview, in eastern Johannesburg, just after 14:P00 on Wednesday by detectives of the Gauteng organised crime unit.
Martins-Engelbrecht said the drugs confiscated probably had a street value of about R1m and probably had been imported for distribution on the local market.
"Despite its cost - heroin is expensive - the drug is a growing menace on our streets," she said.
The man is expected to appear in Johannesburg magistrate's court soon.
