Islamabad - The Gift of the Givers relief team of aid workers, doctors and journalists, which has spent the past week in earthquake-ravaged Pakistan, is set to arrive back in South Africa on Thursday night, following their relief mission. However, they have pledged to continue their efforts to assist the country in its time of need.
The news came as team members and the general population of Rawalpindi and Islamabad experienced at least three significant tremors during early and mid-morning.
Over the past week or so, the team has split up into various groups to distribute millions of rands worth of aid and has administered medical assistance to hundreds of people.
On Wednesday, the group met with local authorities at the Cantonment General Hospital, where the doctors worked tirelessly for several days. The South African team thanked both the military and other local officials for their co-operation.
Gift of the Givers chairperson Dr Imtiaz Sooliman thanked both the SA High Commission in Pakistan and the military for their help and said the organisation will continue to support the hospital. He said a highly trained South African nurse, and orthopaedic and trauma specialists, are due to arrive in the country today. In addition, R300 000 worth of medicines and 1 000 tents are expected to be brought into the country.
