Ulundi - KwaZulu-Natal police shot dead a robber who had killed a police dog during a shoot-out in Kwa-Mbonambi, a
spokesperson said on Friday.
Captain Jabulani Mdletshe said police were responding to a robbery at a phone shop in Ntambanana in the Umfolozi area on Thursday afternoon when the killings took place.
The alleged robbers, driving in a car, sped off from the scene and the police gave chase.
The dog unit was called in for back-up and managed to corner the two robbers in Mbabe, Kwa-Mbonambi.
The two, who were now on foot, were spotted by the dogs.
The robbers opened fire at the approaching dogs, critically wounding one, Buddy, and killing the other, Wolf.
Police officers retaliated and 25-year-old Sibonelo Sihle Zulu was shot dead. A 9mm pistol with its serial numbers erased was found in his possession.
His alleged accomplice Dumisani Mdletshe, 26, was tracked down by a third dog, Tyson, and arrested.
On Friday morning, Mdletshe said Buddy had to be airlifted to a Pretoria hospital for an emergency operation on his spine.
