11 Gauteng hospitals adequate
27/10/2005 09:59 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Only 11 out of Gauteng's 28 public hospitals have received accreditation for being up to standard, SABC radio news reported on Thursday.
It said this emerged at a provincial health summit held in Kempton Park on the East Rand.
An accreditation committee inspected Gauteng hospitals after the Natalspruit hospital in Thokoza made headlines because of the poor state of its facilities.
Committee chairman Clarence Mini, said when he visited the hospitals he was hoping to dispel critical media reports, especially with regard to Natalspruit hospital.
But the opposite happened.
"I, indeed, concurred with them (the media) that it (Natalspruit) was quite a bad hospital."
Mini said the hospital management accepted the criticism and turned matters around within four or five months.
