Port Elizabeth - "The sentence that I am imposing on you today will never bring back the life that you took in a most violent manner."
These were the words on Friday of Judge Cecil Somyalo in the Port Elizabeth Supreme Court to the man who thought a two year-old boy was a tokoloshe when he stabbed him 38 times with a knife in December last year.
Monwabisi Nkathu, 49, was sentenced to seven years in jail after being found guilty on a charge of culpable homicide.
Nkathu has two previous convictions for crimes committed more than 30 years ago, which accounted for this crime being regarded as Nkathu's first offence.
Stabbed 38 times
The boy, Masixole Soteniwa, was wandering by himself in the streets of KwaZekhele in December last year when a girlfriend of Nkathu took pity on him.
Nkathu murdered the boy after the girlfriend put the boy on the bed next to the sleeping Nkathu.
When Nkathu woke at approximately 23:00 and found the boy lying next to him, he thought the boy was a tokoloshe.
Nkathu took the boy outside and stabbed him with a knife in the face and body.
The boy died at the scene.
