East London - A drug find caused a stir in Mdantsane on Tuesday when it came to light that one of the suspects is a state prosecutor at the magistrate's court in the city.
Officials of the NU1 township police station confiscated more than 4 000 Mandrax tablets after receiving a tip-off from the public.
Inspector Stephen Marais, police spokesperson, said the bust took place at about 12:00 near the Highway taxi rank in Mdantsane.
"Officials clamped down on a car that was parked in front of a house in this area.
"About 4 230 tablets and two shopping bags filled with an unknown white powder were found," said Marais.
Details sketchy
Marais said the powder would be sent to Cape Town where forensic tests would determine the nature of the substance.
Two men and a woman were arrested and taken to Mdantsane police station.
They'll appear in the local magistrate's court on Wednesday on charges of illegal possession of Mandrax.
Indra Goberdan, senior prosecutor in Buffalo City, confirmed the woman is indeed a state prosecutor.
"I'm not certain of the details of the case but she is a state prosecutor," said Goberdan.
Goberdan said the accused would be treated like anyone else and wouldn't receive special treatment.
"Her name may not be released yet but I can say that we've never had any problems with her," said Goberdan.
