Johannesburg - A policeman from the Pretoria vehicle theft unit has been arrested in connection with a truck hijacking, said police on Wednesday.
Inspector Anton Breedt said the policeman was arrested on Tuesday, shortly after the hijacking, near Rosslyn Park.
Breedt said: "The policeman and two other men stopped a truck, carrying cotton and 300 boxes of cigarettes, just outside Pretoria.
"The three were driving a white car. They forced the passengers of the truck - two men and three women - out of the truck and asked them to get into other vehicles."
Breedt said the women were driven around Rosslyn Park, while the men were bundled into another vehicle and driven around the same area.
Driver 'identified as cop'
He said: "After a while one of the women asked the driver to stop at a petrol station so that she could use the toilet.
"As they stopped, she spotted a metro police officer and told him what had happened."
Breedt said the driver of the car was arrested and later identified as a member of the SA Police Services.
The truck, as well as the two truck drivers, were found near the petrol station shortly after the arrest.
The boxes of cigarettes had been stolen from the truck. Breedt said police were investigating and more arrests were expected.
He said the arrested policeman was due to appear in Pretoria magistrate's court soon.
