Pupil, 16, punches teacher
08/11/2005 12:19 - (SA)
Johannesburg - A Grade 10 pupil has punched and thrown an elderly teacher across her desk during a lesson at Dale College in King William's Town, Dispatch Online reported on Tuesday.
The assault was captured on a cellphone video camera by a classmate.
The website said a second teacher, who tried to intervene in the incident at one of the Eastern Cape's most prestigious schools, was also threatened by the tall 16-year-old pupil.
Dale College head Mike Eddy confirmed the incident took place on Friday.
He said the boy allegedly used abusive language towards a classmate.
"The teacher overheard the language and confronted the pupil and informed him that his name would be put down for detention, after which the learner intimidated her."
Teacher treated for shock, bruises
As she walked to her desk she was apparently attacked by the youth who allegedly punched her with his fists from behind, said Eddy.
She was then apparently flung across a desk before classmates restrained the attacker.
When a teacher from an adjoining classroom intervened, the pupil allegedly threatened to assault him as well.
The woman, who teaches English and Afrikaans to pupils from Grades eight to 10, was treated for shock and bruises on her arms.
However, she returned to class later that morning.
She has asked that her name be withheld, saying she'd been "traumatised enough".
Boy under parental supervision
The 16-year-old pupil also received medical treatment for an undisclosed condition.
"He has had a medical problem, the extent of which I am not aware," Eddy said.
The boy will be kept under parental supervision.
"There has not been any recent behavioural problems with him where he vented his anger as he did on Friday."
Eddy said the entire incident was captured on a cellphone video camera by a classmate. These images would form part of the disciplinary and internal investigation into the incident.
The attack was considered a "serious offence and unacceptable, whatever the circumstances", Eddy said.
