Johannesburg - An audit report has revealed the Mpumalanga education department has been defrauded of R26m for toilets and water tanks that were never supplied, said reports on Tuesday.
According to the audit report by PriceWaterhouseCoopers, the contractors were appointed to build toilets and provide water tanks to schools used as polling stations during the last national elections.
The companies failed to deliver any of the services, but submitted a claim of R26m to the government.
Thomas Msiza, the provincial education spokesperson, said action would be taken against those implicated in the scam.
This included contractors, surveyors and government officials.
Msiza said they had referred the matter to the state attorney and also to local police.
He said: "I can assure you we will move as speedily as possible and it will not take us more than a month to take this matter to the disciplinary committee."
