Johannesburg - The three men who allegedly assaulted the chief of the Ekurhuleni metro police department (EMPD), Robert McBride, on Saturday are due to appear in court soon.
EMPD spokesperson chief superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said on Tuesday: "A case has been opened and they will be contacted about when to appear in court. They are known."
The trio allegedly attacked McBride in Pomona, Kempton Park, on Saturday morning when he stopped them for reckless driving.
"McBride was at an intersection waiting for the robot, when he was passed by a white car with four occupants, driving at breakneck speed, (and) which skipped the red robot. "McBride pursued the vehicle.
"Despite the fact that McBride was in full uniform and had blue lights on and the siren blaring, the driver... proceeded to go against several red traffic lights."
When the car came to a halt, three of the occupants allegedly attacked McBride and attempted to grab his service pistol.
He fired warning shots and the men fled on foot when help arrived.
The were tracked down on Sunday and face charges of failure to stop, resisting arrest and assault.
