Probe 'reckless' top cop - DA

Johannesburg - The Gauteng safety and security MEC should launch an inquiry into the "reckless" behaviour of Ekurhuleni metro police chief Robert McBride, said the Democratic Alliance on Thursday.
John Moodey of the DA said: "He has a history of reckless behaviour and has confirmed this pattern by the manner of his involvement in his dispute with motorists on Saturday morning."
Making him Ekurhuleni metro police chief was "a bad idea".
McBride allegedly fired shots after chasing three men who he said had not stopped at traffic lights, and tussling with them at their destination.
'McBride fired shots'
He said: "MEC Firoz Cachalia should immediately set up an independent, credible and transparent enquiry into this incident and its aftermath.
"This may do something to arrest the slide in credibility of the Metro police services."
Moodey said though McBride's and the men's version of events differed, one fact didn't seem to be in dispute. He said: "McBride fired a shot or shots."
"It is standard police procedure that police don't use firearms unless lives are at risk. The question in this instance was whose life was at risk that justified McBride firing his weapon?"
Moody said if McBride's life had been endangered why did he not charge his assailants with attempted murder.
