SA, China to align policies

Johannesburg - South Africa and China are to align their protocols for preventing and managing birdflu, Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), and foot-and-mouth disease, it emerged on Wednesday after talks between Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang and her counterpart in China.
The two countries would also be working together to deal with chronic diseases of lifestyle, including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer and the promotion of healthy lifestyles, said Tshabalala-Msimang's spokesperson.
The Minister's talks with Gao Qiang in Beijing on Tuesday were part of a three-day visit to discuss issues including the management of infectious and chronic diseases, medicine regulation and the development of traditional medicines.
During her stay, Tshabalala-Msimang visited the Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine and a traditional medicine hospital in Beijing to see China's progress in developing its traditional medicine practice as a critical element of health care delivery.
"Traditional medicine is reported to have played an important role in China's ability to respond to Sars outbreak in 2003," her spokesperson said.
