Hospitals desperate for blood
16/11/2005 17:03 - (SA)
Johannesburg - The SA National Blood Service (SANBS) is desperately in need of blood to supply the country's hospitals, it said on Wednesday.
Spokesperson Ianthe Exall said the SANBS had a stock of blood for two days, which was not enough to supply the hospitals.
"Ideally, we should have seven days of stock. At the moment, we are not collecting enough."
Exall said the end of the year period was traditionally a difficult one for blood donations.
Due to the December holidays, the service was not able to access schools and colleges which were a major source of the blood supply.
The SANBS needs to collect 3 000 units of blood daily to supply the country's hospitals.
