Call to clear criminal records
28/11/2005 15:46 - (SA)
Johannesburg - People who were granted amnesty by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) can now have their criminal records cleared, the justice department said on Monday.
"Criminal records of offenders for which amnesty was granted... can now be expunged by filling in the relevant forms which are available at SAPS offices countrywide," justice spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said in a statement.
The TRC had been established in accordance with the Promotion of National Unity and Reconciliation Act. Although the commission facilitated the amnesty process and granted amnesty, the relevant criminal records remained in existence.
Kganyago said people who were granted amnesty should visit their nearest police station to fill in an application form to clear their records.
Applicants would be required to provide information regarding the offence, when it was committed, who the victims were, the amnesty reference number and contact details.
"A criminal record may affect the relevant person when they apply for a job or travel overseas, for example."
Kganyago urged applicants to supply complete and correct information, otherwise the process would be delayed.
