  • Polokwane - The exam results of 183 matric pupils at a private school are being withheld following allegations of irregularities in two of their final papers.

The Limpopo education department is investigating if pupils at Mpedi Bapeding private school in Bakenberg, outside Polokwane, were assisted when writing their Afrikaans second language and accounting papers last year.

"Our markers suspected irregularities on the answer sheets and we are investigating those suspicions," said education spokesperson Ndo Mangala on Wednesday.

He said disciplinary action would be taken if there had been any cheating.

"If most of the pupils cheated, it shows that the problem must be with the school and not the pupils," he added.

But if individual pupils are found guilty, they will be banned from writing their matric exams for two years, he said.

Mangala said the school also risked losing its status as an exam centre.

He said there were concerns that some private schools gave answers to pupils so as to be seen as producing good results and attracting more pupils.

The director of the school, John Seletela, denied there'd been any wrongdoing and said those who made the allegations were jealous of his school's success.

"They are investigating why my learners got so many answers rights, and so few wrong," he said.
