Orphans 'used for sex, drugs'
26/01/2006 10:24 - (SA)
Johannesburg - The Western Cape social services department is to investigate allegations of child prostitution and drug peddling at an orphanage in Cape Town, SABC reported on Thursday.
The allegations surfaced last year that children at the El Noor orphanage were being used as prostitutes and drug peddlers.
The orphanage, which is home to 42 children of school-going age and a handful of toddlers, is funded by a wealthy Cape Town businessman who wants to remain anonymous.
Western Cape Social MEC Kholeka Mqulwana held an urgent meeting on Wednesday with senior officials in her department where it was decided that the allegations needed to be probed further.
Spokesperson Simphiwe Xako said although the department was aware of the allegations, an internal investigation was under way to verify them.
He said should the allegations prove to be true, criminal charges will be brought against those implicated.
