  • China demands safety in Zim
  • Beijing - Armed robbers in South Africa have shot dead four Chinese people in one month, state press reported on Monday, with the events making front-page news of many papers in China.

In the latest incidents, a Chinese man and woman who ran a small shop 45 kilometres from Johannesburg were killed in a robbery on Sunday night, the newspapers said.

The armed robbers fled the scene after taking more than R50 000 and some jewellery from the shop, which sold clothes and household appliances, the China Daily and other papers said.

The killings occurred three days after armed robbers shot dead Chen Jingmin, a 23-year-old man from eastern China's Shandong province on the northern outskirts of Johannesburg, according to the China Daily.

On January 10, a Hong Kong businessman was attacked and robbed at his home in Johannesburg and died the next day in hospital, according to the China Daily.

There are more than 100 000 Chinese nationals doing businesses in South Africa, with more being targeted as they become wealthier and buy big houses or luxury cars, a Chinese embassy official told the China Daily.

The most recent events were carried on the front page of a wide range of papers in the Chinese capital on Monday, including the China Daily, the Beijing News and the Beijing Morning Post.
