Pretoria - Singer Steve Hofmeyr will appeal to President Thabo Mbeki to keep Pretoria as the name of the capital instead of changing it to Tshwane.

Hofmeyr would join the trade union, Solidarity, in handing over a memorandum to this effect to Mbeki's office, the union said on Wednesday.

The memorandum, to be handed over on Thursday, is also signed by legal expert Professor Marinus Wiechers, Blue Bulls ex-players association chairperson Piet Uys, and Federasie van Afrikaanse Kultuurvereniginge chairperson Prof Danie Goosen.

The move comes after President Mbeki told the Progressive Governance Summit last week that he was grappling with the difficult issue of the name-change.
