Johannesburg - Two alleged hijackers were arrested after a shoot-out in Pinetown on Wednesday, KwaZulu-Natal police said.

Superintendent Daniella Veldhuizen said the men hijacked a woman in a red Volkswagen Fox at the Pinelands Tennis Club in Pinetown on Tuesday afternoon.

"The woman reported the incident and an off-duty police officer spotted the same car in New Germany, Pinetown, this morning (Wednesday)," said Veldhuizen.

"He then flagged down a police patrol van and security guards to assist him. They cornered the vehicle and the two men jumped out and opened fire on police."

The men ran towards the veld. Police returned fire, hitting the two in their legs.

The men were arrested and are under police guard at the RK Khan hospital, said Veldhuizen.
