Fees scrapped at 400 schools
23/03/2006 20:28 - (SA)
Cape Town - Over 400 primary schools in the Western Cape may soon scrap school fees if they opt for "no fee" status, provincial education MEC Cameron Dugmore announced on Thursday.
He said his department had offered the option to the schools,
for implementation from May 1.
This would benefit 146 192 students attending ordinary public schools in the province, or 15.9% of the total.
The offer was in line with new education legislation to scrap
fees in poor schools.
Although the law would only come into effect next year, as an
interim measure provinces could invite schools to apply for "no
fee" status for the rest of the current financial year, depending
on the availability of funds.
The Western Cape had set aside R29m for this purpose in
2006/7, an amount additional to already-allocated "norms and
standards" funding.
Parents of children attending "no fee" schools would not have to pay fees or apply for exemption.
"No fee" schools would also supply all students with support
materials.
