Cape Town - The family of a Cape civil engineer who died with four other South Africans in a ferry tragedy in Bahrain wanted to surprise him on his birthday away from home.

On Friday, Simone Jeppe confirmed her father, Alan Jeppe, 51, had died in the incident.

She said: "Our family heard the news on Friday morning.

"My elder brother phoned us and told us about the accident.

"As a family, we are going through difficult times.

"We would have left for overseas on April 11 to surprise him on his birthday on April 14."
