'Hijacker' holds cops hostage
11/04/2006 08:12 - (SA)
Durban - Police are investigating how a hijacking suspect, who held three police officers hostage on Sunday night, managed to acquire a gun while in Pinetown Police Station holding cells.
Provincial police communications director Bala Naidoo on Monday said that a thorough police investigation is under way.
The hostage drama began at 20:30 on Sunday night, when a police officer went to inspect the holding cells.
"It was then that the man in custody produced a firearm and shot the officer in his wrist, he then shot another officer in his back and took a third hostage," said Naidoo.
The man then held the three officers, two of which were bleeding in his cell.
"We then entered into negotiations with him and we managed to persuade him to let one of the officers go," said Naidoo.
The man then got aggressive and threatened to kill the other two officers.
"It was then that the task team was called in and a single shot was fired at the man. He died instantly," said Naidoo.
He said the injured police officers are reportedly in a stable condition at a Durban hospital.
It is believed the man was arrested for a hijacking two months ago.
Police have not yet released his name.
