Johannesburg - Three awaiting trial prisoners escaped from the Athlone magistrate's court cells on Friday morning, Western Cape police said.

Captain Randall Stoffels said the men were supposed to appear in court for robbery and vehicle hijacking.

Sedick Abdullah, 26, Abdul Kader, 24, and Arnesto Adams, 24, escaped at about 11:00 while waiting in the cells to appear in front of a magistrate.

It was not clear how they escaped and police were investigating, said Stoffels.

Police requested anyone with information to help with the investigation by phoning the Crime Stop on a share - call on 08600 10111.
