Bus fire 'won't hit commuters'
24/04/2006 11:47 - (SA)
Durban - The burning of 59 buses in Umlazi, south of Durban, would not significantly affect commuters, the provincial department of transport said on Monday.
"The bus company has told us that it's not as bad as they expected it to be," spokesperson Mawande Jubasi said.
"There will be problems but they have assured us that they have sent buses from other areas."
The company, Remant Alton, was the sole provider of bus transport to about 200 000 commuters in the area, Jubasi said.
Local police spokesperson Captain Vincent Ndunge said no arrests had been made in connection with the incident on Sunday.
There was also no "clear cut indication" of the motive, he added.
The damage from the fire was estimated to be over R20m.
