Durban - KwaZulu-Natal police arrested three men after an attempted bank robbery at the Standard Bank in Isithebe on Monday morning.
The robbers broke into the bank through the roof between 01:00 and 03:00, Captain Tienkie van Vuuren said.
"They attempted to cut open a wall with an angle grinder but they didn't get very far. We don't know what happened but they may have triggered the alarm."
She said three men seen waiting outside the bank in a car fled when police arrived.
Those in the bank fled the scene on foot. Police stopped and searched three men about 15km from the scene.
"They were arrested when police found an AK47 assault rifle, two pistols, an angle grinder and drill possibly used in the robbery at a nearby spaza shop."
