'Govt must address crime'

Johannesburg - President Thabo Mbeki needs to make use of Freedom Day to condemn the "senseless violence" that is claiming thousands of lives a year in South Africa, the Freedom Front Plus said on Thursday.
"The silence of the president and the government on, for example farm murders, leads a lot of people to come to the conclusion that these issues are not a priority for the government," party leader Pieter Mulder said in a statement.
He said with more than 18 000 murders annually, South Africans could not feel "free and secure".
Because most murders were not solved it meant thousands of killers were walking freely around in South Africa.
"Is this what a free and secure society looks like?" Mulder asked.
The party also condemned what it saw as the "underlying racism" of many murders.
It called on all South Africans to, in accordance with section 12 of the Constitution, respect the security of the person.
