Woman beats man to escape rape

Harrismith - A 22-year-old woman, faced with an imminent gang-rape, hit one of her attackers on the head with a bottle before freeing herself from their grip, reported eastern Free State police on Monday.
The woman was standing outside a tavern at 22:30 in Harrismith on Saturday when she was approached by two men, said superintendent Motarafi Ntepe.
He said the men dragged her far from the tavern and one tried to pull her underwear down.
"When she realised these people were going to rape her, she picked up an empty bottle which was lying on the ground and hit one of the suspects on the head, while screaming for help," said Ntepe.
The men let her go and fled when they realised the tavern's patrons had seen them, said Ntepe.
The woman opened a case of attempted rape against the two men and a 32-year-old man was arrested.
Was dragged to the toilet
In another incident in the area on Sunday at 21:00, a 19-year-old man was arrested for raping a 25-year-old woman at a tavern in Intabazwe, said Ntepe.
She said the youth, and an accomplice, also dragged the woman to the toilet in full view of tavern customers.
Ntepe said both men took turns raping her before security guards saw what was happening and called police. The accomplice fled.
"The security officials close the tavern door to stop the second suspect from escaping," said Ntepe, and the man was arrested.
The two men arrested were expected to appear in Harrismith magistrate's court on Tuesday.
