Cop bites off man's tongue
03/05/2006 13:45  - (SA)

Bushbuckridge - A policewoman has freed herself from a potential rapist by biting off his tongue.

The 40-year-old man, who works at a chain store in Bushbuckridge, was admitted to Mapulaneng hospital in Limpopo in a serious condition just before midnight on Monday.

The woman said the man had lured her into his house after they had been drinking together.

She said she and her colleagues, all men, had been drinking at a tavern, but they decided to go looking for women and left her behind.

They told her to call them when she wanted to go home.

She continued to socialise and the suspect offered to take her to the local police station to call her friends, as her cellphone battery was flat.

On the way, he lured her into his house, saying he needed to get a jersey.

In her statement to the police, the policewoman said the man stripped her naked and tried to kiss her - so she bit off his tongue and leapt naked out of the window.

She ran to neighbours for help.

The neighbours clothe her and took her to the police station, where she opened a case of attempted rape.

She kept the suspect's tongue until the following day, but it was too late for doctors to re-attach it.

Police are investigating a case of assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm against the woman.

They are also investigating a charge of attempted rape against the man.
