Pretoria - Two men have been arrested in connection with the murder of three young women from Mamelodi, eastern Pretoria, police said on Friday.
"We can confirm that two men have been arrested in the Mamelodi murder case, but at this sensitive stage, no further details can be revealed," said police spokesperson Inspector Anton Breedt.
Police found the bodies of Tsholofelo Aphane, 19, Lerato Precious Dinisa, 18, and Lindiwe Mbonani, 19, dumped behind a shopping complex in Mamelodi on Monday. The three were all from Section R.
Mbonani was a pupil at Prosperitus High School in Eersterus while Aphane and Dinisa attended Jafta Mahlangu High School in Mamelodi.
The women were found with only their tops on, leading police to suspect they may have been raped before being killed and their bodies dumped.
Police said the presence of a white substance found oozing from the women's mouths may be an indication they were poisoned.
On Tuesday Tshwane mayor Gwen Ramokgopa visited the families of the three young women, while opposition party the Democratic Alliance said the killings underlined the need for specialised police units.
Memorial services were being held at their high schools in Mamelodi and Eersterus on Friday.
The three would be buried in Mamelodi on Saturday.
