Pretoria - Armed robbers disguised as traffic police hijacked a truck loaded with copper near Pretoria, police said on Tuesday.

The three robbers, dressed as traffic police and driving in a Mercedes-Benz with a blue light and reflectors, pulled over the truck on the R21 highway near St George's Hotel late on Monday night.

"They held the two truck drivers at gunpoint, driving around with them before tying them up and dropping them in the area," said police spokesperson inspector Paul Ramaloko.

He said it was difficult to determine the value of the copper on the truck.

Police were investigating the incident.
