Car guards, cops nab robbers
29/05/2006 13:07 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Teamwork by car guards and the police led to the arrest of two men who tried to rob the Wimpy at Festival Mall in Kempton Park on Monday, North Rand police said.
Staffers were confronted by the two inside the diner at about 08:00 and screamed for help, spokesperson Cynthia Kleinhans said.
The pair ran off and some of the mall's car guards gave chase.
Car guards watch vehicles in exchange for a tip and are a familiar site at public parking places. They are unarmed and many shopping centres regard them as their first line of defence.
Police and metro police arrived to help them and one man was arrested carrying a firearm and the restaurant's keys.
The second man had run into the veld and was shooting at the police.
He was arrested about 20 minutes later in CR Swart road. He was shot in the leg during this arrest.
They would appear in court soon, said Kleinhans.
