Polokwane - A Limpopo street named after former president Nelson Mandela turned into a battlefield on Thursday morning when two robbers were killed in a road accident less than five minutes after hijacking a car.
The car belonged to a drunk motorist that police had just pulled off Nelson Mandela Drive in Polokwane at around 04:30.
The police were escorting the 31-year-old driver to a police van when four hijackers leapt into the idling car and sped off.
Police gave chase and the robbers drove into the back of a truck further down the road.
Two suspects died on the scene, said Capricorn police spokesperson, Superintendent Patty Khumalo.
The other two suspects jumped out of the wreck and ran away.
The dead men have not been identified yet.
Meanwhile, the drunk driver will appear in the Polokwane magistrate's court on Monday.
