Jali jail toll: 43 staff axed
20/06/2006 18:01 - (SA)
Cape Town - Forty-three officials have been fired for misconduct unearthed in the inquiry of the Jali commission into prison corruption, MPs heard on Tuesday.
Correctional services director Bheki Ndebele said these were among 250 cases arising from the commission's interim reports, submitted during its investigation.
Ndebele was briefing parliament's correctional services portfolio committee on the inquiry that lasted more than three years.
The final report, presented to President Thabo Mbeki last December, yielded another 106 cases. These had yet to be "dealt with".
Among the initial 250, 18 officials received written warnings and 26 cases were withdrawn for a variety of reasons - including officials dying or resigning.
Other cases were dropped because of a lack of evidence, said Ndebele.
A total of 120 cases were "under prosecution", either in the department or criminal courts.
Twenty-nine were still under investigation and 14 had yet to be considered, Ndebele said.
