Cops smash car theft syndicate
21/06/2006 11:40 - (SA)
Johannesburg - Ekurhuleni metro police arrested three men in Kempton Park on Tuesday, believed to be part of a car theft syndicate.
Spokesperson Inspector Jimmy Maboko said metro police and the SA Police Service were called in after a tracking company began searching for a stolen Toyota Tazz.
The company's helicopter had tracked the vehicle from a house in Storm Street, Birchacres, thought to be the syndicate's hideout.
Two men were arrested following a chase.
Police spokesman Superintendent Eugene Opperman said four stolen vehicles, registration plates and falsified car registration documents were found at the house in Birchacres.
A third man was arrested at the house.
"It appears, in the early stages of investigation, that possibly 250 to 300 stolen and hijacked vehicles were changed by the same syndicate," Opperman said.
"Police will follow up on those details and more arrests are expected."
The five recovered vehicles were taken to Norkem Park police station.
The men, all in their 30s, would appear in Kempton Park magistrate's court soon.
