Johannesburg - North West police have set up a task team to search for eight prisoners who escaped in Letlhabile near Brits, police said on Wednesday.
Spokesperson Captain Elsabe Augoustides said the crimes committed by the eight had taken place in Letlhabile, and police were "quite confident" they would stick to the area and be found soon.
The eight escaped on Sunday by cutting through their cell roof with a sharp object.
They were being held for rape, car hijacking and house breaking.
"It is not known how they managed to get the sharp instrument into their holding cells, but investigations are continuing," said police spokesperson Inspector Erica Roos.
"The men are dangerous and we appeal to members of the public not to confront them in any way, but to contact the nearest police station if they see or hear anything."
