Johannesburg - A 20-year-old man arrested in connection with the rape and murder of a four-year-old girl appeared briefly in the Kakamas magistrate's court on Monday, Northern Cape police said.

Captain Tony Modise said the case was postponed to July 14 for a bail application. The man was remanded in custody.

Police believe the girl was raped and killed before being dumped in a veld two kilometres from her Langverwag home about three weeks ago.

The girl was bleeding from her nose and mouth, which indicated internal bleeding. She was also bleeding from her private parts which led police to suspect that the girl was raped before being killed.

SABC news reported that the man confessed to the rape and murder on Thursday.
