Nelspruit - A young Christian woman was reduced to tears when questioned on Tuesday about stealing a gospel CD.
Mpumelelo Nkuna, 18, of Lihawu near Nelspruit in Mpumalanga pleaded guilty to stealing the CD from a retail outlet on June 28.
Nelspruit magistrate Eddie Hall asked her a well-crafted set of questions that eventually had her in tears.
He asked if she had taken the CD with the intention of not paying for it.
Nkuna: Yes.
Hall: How much was the CD worth?
Nkuna: R99.99
Hall: What CD was it?
Nkuna: A gospel CD.
Hall: Do you like gospel music?
Nkuna: Yes.
Hall: Are you a religious person?
Nkuna: Yes.
Hall: Do you read the Bible?
Nkuna: Yes.
Hall: What does the Bible say about theft?
That's when Nkuna broke down and cried.
Five days in a cold cell
When asked why she had stolen the CD, she said it was because she didn't have the money to pay for it.
Hall wanted to know if it was worth spending five days awaiting trial in a cold cell "all in the name of the Lord".
She broke down and wept even more.
She was released on warning because she could not raise R300 bail.
She was told to return to court on July 21 when Hall will examine a pre-sentence report and possibly pass sentence.
