Mulaudzi murder: Trial delayed
06/07/2006 09:27  - (SA)

  • Union leader calls for calm
  • Johannesburg - The trial of the alleged assassin of union leader Elias Mulaudzi has been postponed in Carletonville magistrate's court, West Rand police said on Thursday.

Dan Mkhwanazi's was remanded in custody on Wednesday until his next court appearance on July 13, said police spokesperson Inspector Solomon Sibiya.

He said the postponement was granted for further investigation.

Mkhwanazi, 26, allegedly killed Mulaudzi, branch chairman of the National Union of Mineworkers at Carletonville's Driefontein gold mine, on Monday night.

Mulaudzi, 46, was also a town councillor.

He was walking home after work when a man armed with a .38 Rossi revolver stopped him, shot him in the head, and - after he fell down - in the chest.

Mkhwanazi was caught by men associated with Mulaudzi, who handed him over to the police, Sibiya said on Monday.

He said Mkhwanazi came from KwaZulu-Natal and was not known in the Carletonville area.

Mulaudzi's death followed that of two other NUM leaders killed in and around the Driefontein mine.

Selby Mayise, the regional chairman, was killed in the late 1990s. Stokie Monyemoratwa, Mayise's deputy, was shot dead by unknown assailants in 2002.
