Festival-goers in train crash
07/07/2006 21:24 - (SA)
Johannesburg - A woman was injured when a passenger train full of festival-goers and a truck collided at a level crossing in Grahamstown on Friday afternoon, said Eastern Cape police.
Captain Mali Govender said the injured woman, a passenger from Johannesburg of about 20 years, was taken to a local hospital.
Govender said some other passengers had minor injuries.
Govender said the accident happened about 15:00 at the crossing in Rautenbach Road in the Grahamstown industrial area, near the N2.
The Shosholoza Meyl train had been travelling from Grahamstown towards Alicedale, carrying passengers who had been at the Grahamstown Festival.
"As it came to the level crossing, according to driver, he noticed that there was a truck.
"The driver (of the truck) went over with the cab, but he had a long trailer, about 12m long."
Mali said the train with three coaches hit the truck's trailer, which was full of bricks, and "pushed it totally off the road".
The front wheels of the train derailed.
"The driver of the truck was fine," said Govender.
Mali said the passengers had been going to Alicedale, Patterson and Johannesburg and alternative travel arrangements had been made for them.
Police were investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving.
