Justice system 'not working'
14/07/2006 16:47 - (SA)
Pretoria - A "turnaround strategy" was needed in South Africa to ensure an effective judicial system, justice minister Brigitte Mabandla said on Friday.
Mabandla expressed her dissatisfaction with poor service delivery, case backlogs, corruption and other issues affecting the justice department.
"As government we have to ask whether we have adequately equipped institutions that can carry the country through," Mabandla said.
She was speaking at a leadership conference for senior managers that was held in Pretoria.
She said courts had to be restructured and the judiciary reformed to provide "conducive infrastructure" for justice in future.
"As the executive, we don't like to interfere with the (Justice) department, National Prosecuting Authority and the Judiciary but we have to account for policy and give political direction," she said.
Mabandla expressed the hope that the conference could tackle some of the issues.
