Johannesburg - KwaZulu-Natal police were on Wednesday searching for two men who escaped from the cells at Pietermaritzburg magistrate's court.
"The search is still on for Mduduzi Ngubane, 18, and Bongani Ndlovu, 23," said investigating officer Superintendent JJ Brooks.
The pair escaped on Tuesday morning when police took two other prisoners to the cells. "On opening the cell doors a member was confronted and attacked by four awaiting-trial prisoners," Sergeant Sumay van Zyl said on Tuesday.
The prisoners faced charges of murder in connection with Greytown and Kranskop incidents.
They took the policeman's service pistol and court keys before fleeing in different directions. Police sealed off the court building and searched the premises.
"One of the escapees was re-arrested in one of the courts in the public gallery, seated amongst members of the public," van Zyl said.
"A second suspect was arrested in the court halls. On searching him the stolen police service pistol was recovered."
The court keys were later found in a corridor.
The two re-arrested men, aged 26 and 31, now face extra charges of robbery and escaping.
Anyone with information on the escapees can contact Superintendent JJ Brooks on 082 557 4997 or Inspector BB Bhengu on 082 363 2682.
